CKDP Manatee/Mermaid sticker
Show your support for the Cedar Key Dolphin Project with this fun manatee-mermaid die-cut sticker!
This sticker is one of several mythical origin stories featured on our full-size Here There Be Sea Monsters poster at Cedar Key's Pirate Invasion. Perhaps you'd like to hear the tale ... ?
Pirates and sailors of centuries past caught fleeting glimpses of manatees and from what little they saw, believed them to be mermaids. In Greek mythology, Odysseus warns his men to block their ears so as not to hear the haunting song of the Sirens—later described as mermaids—that would lure them to their deaths. In fact, the scientific order for manatees and dugongs, Sirenia, is named after the Sirens. In 1493 Christopher Columbus wrote of one of his sailors in the West Indies sighting what we now know were manatees: “He said he quite distinctly saw three mermaids, which rose well out of the sea; but they are not so beautiful as they are said to be, for their faces had some masculine traits.” Must have been the whiskers!
Size is approximately 2.75 inches by 4 inches. Sticker features archival line drawings of a manatee in blue (© POSMGUYS | stock.adobe.com) and mermaid in red (© endstern | stock.adobe.com), surrounded by the text Cedar Key Dolphin project.
